Audition: Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem - London Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus/Barenboim DG
I’m perhaps late coming to this recording, it captures Barenboim in his young gun role, the chorus and orchestra are on great form and DFD and Mathis are great soloists. It’s well recorded too,
The playing and singing has the same high energy as the conductor.
I really missed out on the sheer drama in Brahms treatment of the music text. The great moments are,
really under nourished and not savoured. The forces are up to the task but I think Barenboim opts for religiousity not drama. As a result I feel it’s undercooked especially the fugues and orchestral detail
